Background of the Study :
Remittance flows from migrants have become a critical component of local development in Nigeria, especially in urban centers like Lagos State. Over the past two decades, remittances have provided essential financial support to households, fueling consumption, small business development, and community investments (Tijani, 2023). The influx of remittance funds has not only helped alleviate poverty but has also contributed to the expansion of local markets and the improvement of public services. However, the impact of these funds on broader local development outcomes remains underexplored. Factors such as the mode of remittance transfer, the efficiency of financial institutions, and fluctuations in global economic conditions all play a role in shaping the developmental impact (Okafor, 2024). This study investigates the multifaceted role of remittances in driving local development in Lagos State, analyzing how these funds are utilized, the socio-economic benefits derived, and the challenges faced in optimizing their impact. Through an in-depth analysis of remittance trends, household surveys, and policy reviews, the study aims to provide actionable insights for enhancing the developmental contributions of migrant remittances (Ogunwole, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of remittance flows in supporting local development, the actual impact on economic and social progress in Lagos State remains inconsistent. Challenges such as inefficient financial systems, inadequate investment channels, and volatile exchange rates hinder the optimal use of remittance funds. This gap between potential benefits and observed outcomes raises questions about the mechanisms through which remittances contribute to local development. The study seeks to identify the factors that limit the effective utilization of remittances and to assess their overall impact on household welfare and community growth (Tijani, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of remittance flows on local development in Lagos State.
To analyze the utilization patterns of remittance funds by households.
To propose recommendations for maximizing the developmental benefits of remittances.
Research Questions:
How do remittance flows contribute to local development in Lagos State?
What are the main challenges affecting the efficient use of remittance funds?
What strategies can enhance the developmental impact of remittances?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Remittance flows have a positive impact on local development.
H2: Inefficiencies in financial systems reduce the effective utilization of remittances.
H3: Improved investment channels can enhance the benefits of remittance inflows.
Significance of the Study
This study critically assesses the role of remittance flows in promoting local development in Lagos State. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and community leaders to optimize the use of migrant funds. By addressing the challenges in remittance utilization, the research contributes to enhanced household welfare and sustainable local growth (Ogunwole, 2025).
